Set in Vienna in 1957, The Night Porter (Il portiere di notte) is a controversial psychological drama that explores trauma, obsession, and power dynamics in the aftermath of World War II.

Max (Dirk Bogarde), a former SS officer, works discreetly as a night porter at a hotel while hiding his war crimes alongside a covert group of ex-Nazis. His past resurfaces when Lucia (Charlotte Rampling), a concentration camp survivor and now the wife of a famous conductor, checks into the hotel.

Instead of turning him in, Lucia re-enters a complex, sadomasochistic relationship with Max, rekindling the dark dynamic they shared during her imprisonment. As Max's former SS comrades view Lucia as a dangerous witness who must be eliminated, Max refuses to hand her over, locking them both in an isolated, doomed struggle against his past allies and societal morality.
