To Die For (1995), directed by Gus Van Sant, is a sharp black comedy and social satire about the obsession with celebrity culture and the media's power.

The Premise
Suzanne Stone (Nicole Kidman) is a small-town weather girl with a single-minded ambition: to become a world-famous TV news anchor. She lives by a strict personal philosophy that "you're nobody in America unless you're on TV," believing that life only holds value if it is broadcast.

The Conflict

• The Marriage: Suzanne marries Larry Maretto (Matt Dillon), a traditional man who wants a quiet life, children, and a role in his family's restaurant business. When Larry starts pressuring her to settle down and give up her career, Suzanne views him as an unacceptable threat to her dreams.

• The Manipulation: While producing a low-budget documentary about local teenagers for a small TV station, Suzanne seduces Jimmy Emmett (Joaquin Phoenix), a naive and vulnerable high school student. She manipulates Jimmy and his friends into believing that Larry is abusive, convincing them to murder her husband.

The Resolution
The murder goes through, but the police quickly identify Suzanne as the mastermind. While she manages to avoid conviction due to a lack of concrete evidence, Larry's father—who has mafia connections—arranges his own form of justice, bringing the story to an ironically dark conclusion.
